Book/Magazine

84pp almanac, first published in 1992
Editors: Jon Wozencroft and Jon Savage

Thirty or more years since, we've had a warehouse find of 'Vagabond' and its documentation of political and technological upheaval, plus a measure of optimism. Cultural and musical activity was bouyant at the time, defiant, as Thatcher fell, along with the Berlin Wall. The schism between enhanced methods of (media) manipulation and the scent of new freedoms was quite pronounced – "all who eagerly perceive the as yet un-named are vagabonds". So what was the direction of travel?

A chemistry between the old and the new, the graphic resistance of previous interventions, Dadaism, Situationism, Chris Marker, Punk, the power of LGBT and feminist protest, the rise of homelessness and the criminalisation of squatting...

'Vagabond' includes essays by Simon Frith about the corporate takeover of music, Mark Sinker on the essence of inequality, mental health and the perilous status of protest. Jon Savage's interview with Martin Hannett – an out-take from "England's Dreaming" – is the fullest portrayal of Joy Division producer/Factory founder ever published. 1991/92 also marks the moment when analogue design practice gives way to the digital. There's a tension here between the photocopier/fanzine aesthetic and the new typography for computer output made possible by PostScript. In other words, the texts and images veer between a clarity of communication and the distress and distortion which would be a feature of digital music in the 1990s.
